What are the alternatives when the PSTN lines get switched off?
Here at Cloud & Telecom Services we recognise the challenges currently facing all lift installation and maintenance companies and the urgent need for all lift owners to sort an alternative to the traditional PSTN lines, which currently service over 60% of emergency lift alarms.
Every lift has an alarm, usually a button that connects to a help centre via a pre-programmed phone number.
Most lifts have been fitted with a master socket either on top of the lift, within the lift shaft or in a comms room, connected to which is a piece of analogue kit known as an Auto-Dialler – when the emergency button is pressed the Auto-Dialler dials the pre-programmed number direct to the help centre over the Openreach copper lines (PSTN’s).
BUT the PSTN lines are being switched off – although the switch off has been extended lift owners need to be ahead of the game to keep their customers safe and the alarm systems operational.
Solutions with Pro’s and Con’s
- GSM Gateway – Our FCT1500L replaces the Openreach master socket, no new cabling or phones required. Calls go over mobile network.
- Plug existing Auto Dialler into the FCT or program the emergency number directly into it – plug in and away you go.
- Wall mountable copper antennae with 10M cable for optimum signal.
- Multi-network Sim Card required for connectivity – we can supply for a nominal fixed annual fee.
- Built in Battery Back-up – 4 hours.
- Cons: Mobile signals can be hampered by surrounding metal if housed within the lift shaft, but option to mount the antennae outside or within a coms room would negate this issue as well as a multi-network sim.

- Install Cat 5 cabling to replace the standard telephone cabling to the lift for a broadband connection and connect an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) to replace the existing master socket.
- We can retain the existing PSTN phone number for you (or supply a new one free of charge)
- The ATA will be pre-programmed to automatically dial the emergency number over our secure internet connected platform.
- Use existing analogue kit.
- Cons: Battery back-up required for both the ATA and router and if the internet is down, so is the emergency service
