Which broadband have you got and what can you get? With the changes happening to copper lines in December 2025 now is the time to check what you have and what you’ll get.
What have I got?
If you have broadband with a telephone number that you can still dial out from using a traditional analogue phone, and your router connects to a socket that looks like one of these, you have either ADSL or FTTC. Both use a copper line for delivery to your property

If you have an Optical Network Termination box (ONT) that your router plugs into, you have a Full Fibre connection. FTTP. An ONT will look like this, there will be no traditional wall socket and you’re calls will go over the internet (VoIP) not a copper line

What Do they mean?
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) This is the original copper line broadband, delivered direct from the exchange. Speeds depend on how far away you are from the exchange. If you have ADSL2+ you get priority of delivery when the exchange is busy and often better speeds compared to standard ADSL.
ADSL is being replaced with SoADSL – same broadband but no phone. if you want to retain your existing number & telephones contact us now.
Average download speed 15mbps
FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet).
This is often sold as full fibre – it isn’t
It is what it says on the tin – Full Fibre is delivered to your local cabinet, which can be on the same street or a couple of miles away. Then a copper line delivers the broadband from the cabinet to your premises.
On the whole speeds are far better than ADSL but can be hindered by how many properties are sharing the cabinet source, peak times can be slower. Speeds also depend on how far away the cabinet is.
Sold as 2 different speed options of 40/10 or 80/20, These are the maximums you can receive. No guarantee you’ll get them.
FTTC is being replaced with SoGEA – same broadband but no phone. if you want to retain your existing number & telephones contact us now.
You will have to use a mobile service or a VoIP provider for calls
Still the same broadband, still delivered over the copper line, just no telephone calls.
Not sure?
If you’re not sure what your getting, check with your supplier. Its not always clear on invoices so you may need to call them. Alternatively drop us a line with your telephone number and address and we’ll find out for you
Want to keep your phone number?
If you want to keep the phone number associated with your ADSL or FTTC connection you need to act now and switch to our VoIP solution.
Want a new Number?
If you want a new telephone number, and are not retaining one from a previous service, we can supply a list of numbers to choose from, any area code and supply your new VoIP service for calls.
Want to get a better broadband speed?
Has your current supplier told you they are ‘upgrading’ your broadband to a digital connection?
Before they go ahead make sure there isn’t a better option than simply switching you to SoADSL or SoGEA.
You may be able to get SoGFAST or even better FTTP:
SoGFast – Single Order GFast Broadband
Like FTTC and SoGEA this broadband relies on a copper line for the final delivery from cabinet to property but it delivers far greater speeds – up to 330mbps.
By adding a device to the connection at the cabinet Openreach can alter the speed frequency. The downside is you can’t be any more than 500meters from the cabinet
so availability is limited. Only option for voice traffic is VoIP which we supply up and down the country.
Contact us to find out if SoGFast is available to you.

FTTP – Fibre to the Premises
This is your own designated Fibre Optic connection from the exchange direct to your property – no sharing, no copper line required and you generally get the speeds you pay for.
Openreach are rolling out the infrastructure across the country, as are other independent companies.
This is broadband only – no voice traffic – so you need to select an IP/VoIP supplier, you also need to secure your phone number if needed. But don’t panic we do all this for you.
For speeds, if you go for anything above 100mbps make sure all your kit is gigabit enabled otherwise you won’t see the benefit.
Maximum download speed available 1000mbps!!
Rural and Inner City Connections
There are still many areas of the country where the only option is SoADSL or SoGEA which are generally too slow for business or even a busy household. FTTP is being rolled out but some areas still wont be serviced beyond the December 2025 deadline.
But there are alternatives and we can find them for you.
SIM Card routers (4/5G Broadband) and point to point antenna services are available. Contact us to find the one for you.
